New Delhi (Agency): In a significant move, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has decided to rename Aurangzeb Lane in Delhi as Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Lane, paying homage to the former President and renowned scientist. The decision comes as a symbolic step to distance the city from the controversial Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, who was known for his actions that were perceived as detrimental to Indian culture.
The announcement was made by Satish Upadhyay, the Vice Chairman of NDMC, who stated that Aurangzeb attempted to “destroy the Indian culture,” and therefore, it was inappropriate to have a road named after him. Upadhyay emphasized the need to honor Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, a visionary leader and a role model for millions, by renaming the lane in his memory.
This is not the first time that NDMC has taken such an initiative. Back in August 2015, Aurangzeb Road was renamed as Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Road, reflecting the council’s commitment to recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to the nation. The renaming of Aurangzeb Lane, which connects Abdul Kalam Road with Prithvi Raj Road, further underscores this intent.
The demand for renaming roads in Lutyens’ Delhi, particularly those associated with Mughal emperors, has been a subject of discussion for some time. In 2022, the Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) called for renaming several existing roads after Indian personalities. The proposed changes included renaming Tughlaq Road as Guru Gobind Singh Road, Akbar Road as Maharana Pratap Road, Aurangzeb Lane as Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Lane, and Shahjahan Road as General Bipin Rawat Road, in honor of India’s first Chief of Defence Staff.
Renaming streets and lanes is often seen as a symbolic gesture to reflect the evolving cultural and historical narratives of a city. It highlights the desire to commemorate individuals who have left a lasting impact on society and to celebrate their contributions. By renaming Aurangzeb Lane as Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Lane, the NDMC aims to create a more inclusive and representative urban landscape that resonates with the aspirations and values of the people.
The decision to rename Aurangzeb Lane has received mixed reactions from various quarters. While it is seen as a positive step by those who believe in honoring national icons, there are also concerns about the erasure of historical significance and the potential controversies surrounding such decisions.
As the city continues to evolve, it is essential to strike a balance between preserving history and acknowledging the achievements of individuals who have shaped the nation. The renaming of Aurangzeb Lane as Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Lane is a testament to this ongoing process of reflection and reinterpretation, as Delhi embraces a more diverse and inclusive narrative that respects the sentiments of its people.
