New Delhi (Agency): Heavy rains have lashed multiple areas of Kerala in recent days, resulting in the unfortunate loss of two lives in Alappuzha district. Responding to the weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange alert for the districts of Pathanamthitta and Idukki, signaling the potential for very heavy rainfall ranging from 6 cm to 20 cm.
The tragic incident occurred as an autorickshaw carrying a family of four lost control amid the heavy rains, overturning and plunging into the Achankovil river. While a woman tragically lost her life in the accident, her son went missing. The husband, daughter, and autorickshaw driver were fortunately rescued by locals, with a scuba team later recovering the young boy’s body during search operations.
In response to isolated heavy rainfall over the past three days in Pathanamthitta district, landslides were reported in certain areas. Furthermore, one shutter of the Moozhiyar dam was opened, leading to an anticipated rise in the water level of the Pamba river. Consequently, authorities have declared a holiday for educational institutions in Konni taluk.
The IMD predicts moderate rain at specific locations in districts including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, and Ernakulam throughout the day. The forecast indicates the continuation of moderate rain in Kerala for the next five days, with the possibility of heavy rains in isolated areas from September 4 to 8.
Amid these weather conditions, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued a warning about the potential for high waves and storm surges along the Kerala coast. Coastal residents and fishermen are urged to exercise caution, avoid dangerous areas, refrain from sea-related activities, and maintain a safe distance between boats to prevent collisions.
As Kerala contends with the impact of heavy rains and associated challenges, authorities and individuals alike are urged to remain vigilant, prioritize safety measures, and take necessary precautions to mitigate risks during this period of inclement weather.
