Agency(Karnataka): In a grave incident at a district government hospital in Vijayapura, Karnataka, four medical staff, including three nurses and a blood bank technician, have been suspended following the death of a 31-year-old woman. The tragedy unfolded after the woman, who had just delivered twins, received a blood transfusion of the wrong type.
The woman, identified as Sharada Doddamani from Dadamatti village in Babaleshwar taluk, was initially admitted to the district hospital on February 23. Following her delivery, she experienced significant bleeding and was urgently transferred to BLDE Hospital. It was later discovered she had been given B-positive blood, whereas her blood type was A-positive.
Dr. Shivanand Mastiholi, the district surgeon, acknowledged the mistake but also noted that the woman had pre-existing health conditions. Despite recovering from the immediate aftermath of the transfusion at the private facility, she succumbed to complications arising from a lung infection, low blood pressure, chronic skin disease, pneumonia, and other issues on March 18.
Dr. Mastiholi emphasized that while the incorrect blood transfusion was a serious error, it was not the sole cause of her death, given her array of health challenges. So far, the family of the deceased has not taken legal action or lodged a formal complaint regarding the incident.
