Agency (New Delhi): A recent plea filed in the Supreme Court calls for the formation of a medical expert panel to scrutinize potential side effects and risks associated with the Covishield vaccine. The petitioner, advocate Vishal Tiwari, proposed that this panel be overseen by a retired judge of the apex court and include specialists from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi.
This application emerges amid claims that the Covishield vaccine, developed under AstraZeneca’s license by the Serum Institute of India, has been linked to Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS)—a rare condition involving low platelet counts and blood clot formation. Despite being classified as a “very rare” side effect, there is a significant concern due to the vast number of doses administered—over 175 crore in India.
Tiwari’s plea also suggests that the Indian government should implement a “vaccine damage payment system,” similar to that in the UK, to compensate those severely disabled or families of those who have died due to vaccine side effects. This comes in response to the increased reports of heart attacks and sudden collapses post-vaccination, particularly among younger demographics.
The plea also urges immediate government action to safeguard public health and prevent future risks associated with vaccinations. The matter has been appended to a pending 2021 petition by Tiwari, which calls for action against allegedly fake vaccines.
