Mumbai (Agency): A 23-year-old man, Lukman Ansari, who was involved in transporting cattle, was reportedly lynched by a group of cow vigilantes in Maharashtra's Nashik district. The incident has led to the arrest of six individuals, according to the police on Wednesday.
The tragic event came to light on June 10 when Ansari's body was discovered in a gorge at Ghatandevi in the Igatpuri area, an official confirmed. Law enforcement authorities have taken six cow vigilantes into custody so far, and efforts are underway to locate other suspects involved in the case. The arrested individuals are said to be affiliated with the Rashtriya Bajrang Dal, a right-wing organization, the official added.
The incident occurred on June 8 when Ansari, accompanied by two others, was transporting cattle in their tempo. They were intercepted by a group of around 10 to 15 activists at Vihigaon in Sahapur, Thane district. The group forcibly took control of the vehicle and "rescued" four bovine animals before heading towards Ghatandevi in Igatpuri.
Upon reaching a secluded location, the attackers allegedly assaulted all three individuals. While Ansari's aides managed to escape, he was unable to flee and fell victim to the assault, the official revealed. Although the accused individuals claim that Ansari died after accidentally falling into a gorge, the police suspect that his demise was a result of the beating.
The police have registered two cases related to the incident, including one under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code, the official further stated. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working diligently to bring all those responsible to justice.
