Kotdwar (Uttarakhand) — Police in Kotdwar, in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, have filed several FIRs after tensions erupted over objections to the name of a local shop, but authorities say the situation in the city is now normal and under control.

The dispute began on Republic Day (January 26) when a group of activists, including members of Bajrang Dal, protested outside a long‑established clothing store called Baba School Dress, run by Mohammad Shoaib, arguing that the use of the word “Baba” could be mistaken for a Hindu religious reference associated with the nearby Siddhbali Baba temple.

A confrontation ensued when local gym owner Deepak Kumar intervened to protect the elderly shopkeeper and challenged the protesters. A viral video shows Kumar asking why the shop’s name should be changed and later identifying himself as “Mohammad Deepak” to make a point about unity.

In response to the clashes and unrest, Kotdwar police registered multiple FIRs against different parties — including a complaint by the shopkeeper alleging threats and intimidation by the protesters, as well as cases related to clashes that took place as tensions rose. Officers also booked others for rioting and related offences to ensure accountability.

Kotdwar Additional Superintendent of Police Chandra Mohan Singh said that, following the legal actions and a “peace meeting” held with community representatives, the law‑and‑order situation is normal in the town. Police have stepped up surveillance, deployed forces at key points, and are monitoring social media to prevent further disturbances.

Authorities said the police intervention and dialogue between different groups have helped defuse immediate tensions, and residents have been urged to maintain peace and harmony.
