New Delhi (Agency): A Haryana minister's vehicle, a purported CBI car, and a road rage incident have collectively exposed an imposter who was posing as an inspector of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), leading to his subsequent arrest.
The accused, identified as Robin Singh in his late 30s, came under scrutiny when his Toyota Innova car, fitted with a forged number plate resembling a CBI vehicle assigned to the Economic Offences Unit, collided with the Fortuner car carrying the family of Haryana Agriculture Minister Jai Prakash Dalal on December 7, 2021.
Singh, pretending to be a CBI inspector from the Economic Offences Unit, followed the minister's vehicle to their residence. He was apprehended by the security personnel stationed there. Singh's car featured a CBI official sticker and he presented an identification card claiming to be a CBI officer, which initially convinced the security personnel to allow him to leave. However, copies of his Aadhar card and photograph were taken, and he was made to apologize for his actions.
This incident was reported to the CBI, which subsequently filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Singh on June 8, 2022.
During the course of the investigation, it was discovered that the Toyota Innova (DL3CBV4369) in which Singh was traveling had been registered under the name of an SP (Superintendent of Police) at the CBI's Economic Offences Unit. Moreover, the Aadhar card and identity card presented by the accused were confirmed to be counterfeit. The CBI also found that the CBI ID card and vehicle registration number plate were forged. Two additional number plates for a vehicle with registration number UP16AT4144 were discovered inside Singh's car.
After nearly a year of investigation, the CBI recently arrested Singh for impersonating a CBI officer. He has been remanded to judicial custody.
This case exposes the potential dangers of impersonation and highlights the need for stringent verification processes to prevent such incidents. The CBI's swift action in apprehending the imposter demonstrates its commitment to upholding the integrity and credibility of the agency. As the legal proceedings continue, authorities will further scrutinize the imposter's motives and any potential links to other criminal activities.
