Agency (New Delhi): The Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC), the technical arm of the Department of Telecommunications (DOT), Ministry of Communications, and Amrita University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to foster innovation in the field of Trustworthy and Responsible Artificial Intelligence Systems.
This collaboration is dedicated to pioneering advancements in Responsible AI, focusing specifically on addressing biases in AI systems and promoting fairness assessments to enhance public trust in these technologies. This initiative aligns with the Government of India’s objectives for advancing AI technologies.
A key aspect of Responsible AI involves ensuring unbiased and fair AI/Machine Learning (ML) systems. TEC has recently released a Standard for Fairness Assessment and Rating of Artificial Intelligence Systems after extensive stakeholder consultations. The goal of this collaboration is to systematically develop tools for assessing bias risks and to establish a robust framework for evaluating and certifying the fairness and reliability of AI technologies.
Smt Tripti Saxena, Senior Deputy Director General at TEC, emphasized the collaboration’s potential to develop groundbreaking solutions for the fairness assessment and rating of AI systems. This MoU aims to bridge the gap between academia and government bodies, thereby fostering rigorous research and bolstering India’s leadership in AI.
The MoU was signed by Sh. Avinash Agarwal, DDG (C&B) from TEC, and Prof Krishnashree Achuthan, Dean of Graduate Studies from AMRITA UNIVERSITY. This agreement formalizes their joint commitment and roadmap for this important initiative.
TEC is recognized as the Standards Setting Organization (SSO) in telecommunications and related ICT sectors in India, responsible for formulating standards for telecom and related ICT equipment, networks, systems, and services in the Indian Telecom Network. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, established under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956, is a multi-campus, multi-disciplinary research university rated as one of India’s top research universities and accredited by NAAC with an “A++” rating.
