Agency(New Delhi): The Indian Government has officially implemented the Press & Registration of Periodicals Act, 2023, marking a significant overhaul of the previous registration system for newspapers and periodicals. This transition to a digital framework aligns with the Digital India initiative, facilitating an online registration process through the Press Sewa Portal. The move signifies a departure from the erstwhile manual and cumbersome procedures, offering a streamlined and efficient approach for publishers.
The launch of the Press Sewa Portal by Anurag Singh Thakur, Minister of Information and Broadcasting, signifies a milestone in making the registration process more accessible and less time-consuming. The portal is designed to handle all related applications, including various forms of registrations and annual statements, leveraging technology to ensure a seamless experience for users.
The portal introduces several features aimed at enhancing user convenience, such as paperless processing, digital payments, and instant access to digital certificates. A chatbot for grievance resolution and a user-friendly website further support the initiative, underscoring the government’s commitment to modernizing the registration framework for publications.
Under the new PRP Act, the definition of a periodical has been refined, excluding books and journals of a scientific, technical, and academic nature from the need for registration. This adjustment clarifies the scope of the Act and focuses its application on newspapers and similar publications.
The online registration process is meticulously outlined on the Press Sewa Portal, starting from the creation of a profile by the periodical’s owner to the submission of the registration application by the publisher. The system is designed to reduce errors and expedite the processing time, with updates communicated via SMS and email to ensure transparency and efficiency.
This legislative update represents a significant step towards modernizing the press registration process in India, aiming to foster a more dynamic and responsive media environment. By embracing digital solutions, the government is not only streamlining administrative procedures but also promoting a more inclusive and accessible platform for publishers across the country.
