The Supreme Court of India has intervened in the case of a student allegedly slapped by his classmates on the instructions of a teacher in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. The apex court has directed the Muzaffarnagar Superintendent of Police to provide a status report on the ongoing investigation and ensure the safety of the student and his parents. Additionally, the court issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government, seeking its response by September 25.
The case came to the attention of the Supreme Court through a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi’s petition urged the court to expedite the investigation into the incident, which has garnered significant public outrage and media attention.
The incident in question took place in a school in Khubbapur village, Muzaffarnagar, where a teacher named Tripta Tyagi allegedly made communal remarks and instructed her students to slap a Muslim classmate. This drastic act was reportedly in response to the student failing to complete his homework.
The teacher’s actions were widely condemned after a video emerged, depicting her instructing the students to physically assault the young boy. The video also captured her making a communal remark, further exacerbating the controversy surrounding the incident.
