New Delhi (Agency): A political rally in Vinukonda, a town in Andhra Pradesh’s Palnadu district, turned into a battleground on Thursday. A police inspector had to fire a round into the air to scatter rival political factions from the ruling YSRCP (Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party) and the opposition TDP (Telugu Desam Party).
According to Narsaraopeta sub-divisional police officer K V Mahesh, the situation is now under control. The police have imposed Section 144 of the CrPC (Criminal Procedure Code) to ensure peace and order in the area.
Officer Mahesh explained that the issue began when about 50 TDP supporters noticed the car of the local legislator from the ruling party, Vinukonda MLA Bolla Brahma Naidu of YSRCP, trailing their rally. The TDP supporters began to express their frustration at Naidu over a recent police case filed against district TDP leader G V Anjaneyulu. As this confrontation escalated, supporters of the ruling YSRCP party also gathered.
As a result, rival factions started shouting at each other and throwing stones, leading to a tense standoff that lasted for about an hour. This conflict prompted the local police inspector to open fire into the air to disperse the crowd.
According to Officer Mahesh, four to five individuals sustained injuries due to the stone-pelting incident. The situation calmed down after the police firing. However, the police official pointed out that the TDP supporters had not obtained official permission for their rally.
