New Delhi (Agency): In Nagaland, the Catholic Association (CAN) has voiced its opposition to the introduction of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The group emphasizes that the true power and unity of India come from its rich diversity and not from imposing uniformity.
Bishop of Kohima Diocese, Most Rev James Thoppil, spoke about this issue. He stated that the UCC could impact personal, tribal, and religious aspects of an individual’s life. He emphasized, “The moral practices of Human Rights should be respected… Cultural diversity must be enhanced and encouraged so that people do not become robots in uniformity but rather diversity defines the strength and unity of the nation.”
Highlighting the same sentiments, CAN president Johnny Ruangmei described the UCC as ‘alien’. He asserted that with India’s diverse tribes and religions, “We cannot be ruled by one law.” He drew a distinction between being ‘united’ and ‘uniform’, stressing that the country should unify its diversity without forcing uniformity.
Ruangmei also mentioned that the seminar discussed other topics, like policies of the state government and concerns over peace in Manipur. The findings from this seminar will soon be shared with the government for their consideration.
