New Delhi (Agency): During the statewide celebrations leading up to the Onam festival, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan emphasized the government’s commitment to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor. Speaking at the Nishagandhi open-air auditorium, Vijayan said, “The government aims to create a better tomorrow by treating everyone equally.”
This comes in light of recent concerns raised about the state’s economic condition. “Such fake narratives are debunked today,” the Chief Minister stated. He pointed out that major roads and towns are already witnessing festive celebrations. “We should be aware of those who spread such fake narratives,” he added.
The Left leader also noted that while the global trend shows a widening gap between the wealthy and the impoverished, Kerala is taking a different route. “Embracing the true essence of Onam, we are actively working to narrow the divide,” Vijayan said. According to him, the government is supporting all societal sections.
Kerala is currently implementing unique initiatives aimed at eradicating extreme poverty, which Vijayan marks as a first for any Indian state. He outlined the measures: “A total of 64,006 families, identified as living in extreme poverty, have now been equipped with requisite government documentation.” Comprehensive plans designed to improve their quality of life and livelihoods are also in place. “By pooling resources from multiple departments, the Government is determined to eliminate extreme poverty from Kerala by 2025,” Vijayan declared.
Cultural figure Mallika Sarabhai, who attended the event along with popular actor Fahadh Faasil, said that the soul of Kerala lies in its democratic consciousness. She addressed the gathering by highlighting the importance of the state’s democratic values.
Onam celebrations in Kerala are a major cultural event, with this year’s festival falling on August 29. According to Vijayan, various cultural programs are being organized at 31 places across the state capital, along with numerous events and celebrations happening statewide.
The announcement by the Chief Minister holds significance as it aligns with the spirit of Onam, a festival that traditionally celebrates social equality and well-being. By vowing to address economic disparities and support vulnerable communities, the Kerala government aims to put the festival’s core values into practical action. This sets a precedent that could serve as an example for other states striving to address societal imbalances.
