Bengaluru (Agency): Karnataka’s Home Minister, Dr. G Parameshwara, faced criticism after downplaying the severity of a disturbing incident at a Udupi college. The video of a girl student allegedly being filmed by fellow female students in a restroom was labeled as a “small incident blown out of proportion” by the minister.
The incident occurred at a paramedical college in Udupi, where three girls purportedly videographed their classmate, who belongs to another community. The accused girls were subsequently suspended from the college, and an FIR was filed against them by the police.
The home minister’s remarks drew sharp criticism from the BJP, with former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai accusing him of taking the matter lightly. Bommai questioned why an FIR was registered and pointed to the confessional letter by the accused girls as evidence of wrongdoing.
The BJP leader expressed concern over the college administration’s handling of the case and demanded punishment for those involved. He also criticized the police for allegedly investigating the background of the girl who reported the incident and called for an impartial investigation.
In response to the BJP’s criticism, Parameshwara accused them of indulging in “petty politics” and urged them to focus on more significant issues like drought and floods. He questioned the need to give a political color to the incident and emphasized that no complaint or criminal activity beyond the incident had been reported.
The controversial remarks by the Home Minister have ignited a debate on the seriousness of the incident and the need for a thorough investigation. Opposition parties are demanding accountability and impartial action against those responsible.
