New Delhi (Agency): On Tuesday morning, at least three people were killed in an ambush by unidentified men in Kangpokpi district, Manipur, according to an official statement. The attack occurred in the area between Ireng and Karam Vaiphei villages, in the Kanggui locality. The official noted, “We do not have much details now. All we know is that the incident took place around 8.20 am when unidentified men gunned down three civilians.”
This incident follows another violent episode that happened on September 8 at Pallel in Tengnoupal district. In that attack, three people were killed, and more than 50 were injured. The violence in Manipur has been escalating since May 3 when a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organized in the hill districts. This march protested against the majority Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
The Meitei community makes up about 53% of Manipur’s population and mainly lives in the Imphal valley. In contrast, tribals, which include Nagas and Kukis, constitute about 40% of the state’s population and primarily reside in the hill districts. Since the outbreak of ethnic violence in May, more than 160 people have been killed, and several hundred have been injured.
The growing number of violent incidents has heightened concerns about the stability and security in the state. Authorities are faced with the challenging task of bringing peace to a region deeply divided along ethnic lines. The recent events add urgency to the need for effective intervention and conflict resolution measures to prevent further loss of life and ensure the safety of the residents.
