New Delhi (Agency): In the bustling heart of Srinagar’s Lal Chowk, an unexpected and symbolic act unfolded. On India’s 77th Independence Day, Saifullah Farooq, once known for his militant activities, proudly hoisted the national flag. This was not just a display of national pride, but a powerful message of transformation and hope.
Farooq, speaking to the media, opened up about his past, saying, “I was a former terrorist, today I am hoisting the National flag at Lal Chowk.” This poignant statement resonated with the essence of change and redemption. His past life, marked by violence, was now replaced with a vision of a peaceful and prosperous Jammu and Kashmir.
But he didn’t stop at mere reflections of his journey. Farooq had a message, especially for those who are still involved in extremist activities. He earnestly voiced, “I want to say to other terrorists that the upcoming times are beautiful in Jammu and Kashmir.” In an appeal filled with emotion, he reached out to those still hiding, urging them to “stop right now and take steps for the security of the nation.” His sentiments echoed a deeper realization, “Earlier I used to feel that I was a hero but today I felt like a real hero.”
Drawing attention to the evolving Indian scenario, Farooq emphasized the importance of acknowledging the new age. He asserted to active militants, particularly those from Pakistan, “This is not India of 1965 or 1975, this is India of 2023.” His words underline the country’s progress and its firm stand against terrorism and violence.
This momentous flag hoisting event witnessed a sizable gathering at Lal Chowk. For many years, Srinagar had witnessed subdued Independence Day celebrations. However, this year marked a distinct shift, symbolizing the region’s evolving dynamics and aspirations for peace.
In a parallel sentiment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the nation from the historic Red Fort, portrayed his vision of a self-assured India. Reflecting on the nation’s achievements, he said, “When we set our mind to a task, we get it done. This has been our track record.” Celebrating the spirit of contemporary India, he declared, “This is a new India full of self-confidence…Ye Bharat na rukta hai, na thakta hai, na haanfta hai aur na hi haarta hai (The India of today doesn’t stop, tire, gasp or give up).”
The Prime Minister optimistically foresees an India that will stand as a developed nation by 2047, marking a century since its independence. He believes the inherent character of India will propel this vision.
In essence, the Independence Day celebrations in Srinagar, especially Farooq’s act, stood as a testament to the transformative power of hope, unity, and peace. A former militant’s journey towards nationalism offers a beacon of hope for a harmonious future.
