New Delhi (Agency): The Bombay High Court has raised concerns over the presence of residential structures near an ammunition factory in Khadki, Pune, citing the risks to human lives due to what it termed “irregular” town planning. The court warned government authorities and local civic bodies of “strict action” if they fail to address the issue.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Arif Doctor pointed out that in the event of an untoward incident, the lives of people living near the factory would be in jeopardy. The court directed the Union Ministry of Defence, the Maharashtra government, the Commissioners of the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporations, and the Pune Collector to hold a meeting and find a practical solution to the problem.
The court’s concern stems from a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by two Pune residents who raised alarms about the construction of residential buildings in the restricted area. The PIL sought a directive to prevent any further construction in the vicinity.
The bench expressed dissatisfaction with the Maharashtra government for allowing irregular town planning that put human lives at risk. Chief Justice Upadhyaya remarked, “Human lives are at stake here. God forbid if something happens…for whose protection are these ammunitions being stored? You are risking the lives of the public.”
The court emphasized the need for all authorities to collaborate and resolve the issue. It warned against evading responsibility, passing the buck, or engaging in a blame game. Instead, the bench urged government bodies to work together to safeguard the lives of citizens.
Additional Solicitor General Devang Vyas informed the court that a meeting would be convened to find a solution. The court expressed hope that positive discussions would lead to a resolution. The matter has been scheduled for further hearing on October 30.
