Patna, Bihar: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Rajkumar Rai, also known as Aala Rai, was shot dead in the Munna Chak area under the Chitragupt Nagar police station in Patna, officials confirmed.

According to SP (East) Parichay Kumar, the incident occurred when Rai, a resident of Raghopur in Vaishali who was currently living in Munna Chak, returned home in a four-wheeler after completing some work. While purchasing food from a nearby hotel just before his house, he was ambushed by two armed assailants who opened fire on him, hitting him with six bullets.

The Chitragupt Nagar police, stationed just steps away, arrived promptly at the scene. Rai was rushed to PMCH hospital, where he was declared dead.

Police recovered six bullet shells from the crime scene. SP East confirmed that CCTV footage captured two attackers involved in the murder. He added that Rai was involved in both political and land-related activities.

Top police officials, including ASP Sadar Abhinav, Kankarbagh SHO Abhay Kumar, and Chitragupt Nagar SHO, are currently investigating the case.

CBI Court Sentences Three to Life in Journalist Rajdeo Ranjan Murder Case

Meanwhile, in a separate case, a CBI court in Muzaffarpur on Wednesday sentenced three individuals—Rohit Kumar Soni, Vijay Kumar Gupta, and Sonu Kumar Gupta—to life imprisonment and imposed a collective fine of ₹1.5 lakh in the 2016 murder case of journalist Rajdeo Ranjan.

The case, initially registered by Siwan Police, was taken over by the CBI on September 15, 2016. Rajdeo Ranjan, a journalist, was shot dead on May 13, 2016. Following investigation, the CBI filed multiple charge sheets, naming several accused, including the late Mohammad Shahabuddin and others.

One accused, Sonu Kumar Soni, is being tried separately in Juvenile Court. With Shahabuddin’s death, proceedings against him were abated. The court found sufficient evidence against the remaining accused and issued life sentences.

The court also directed the District Legal Services Authority, Muzaffarpur, to compensate the victim’s family as per legal provisions.
