Agency(New Delhi): Trinamool Congress today criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his remarks on women’s safety in West Bengal, highlighting the alleged double standards concerning the safety of women wrestlers. Derek O’Brien, a senior figure within Trinamool and a member of the Rajya Sabha, spotlighted the contradiction in the Prime Minister’s statements on women’s security while BJP leaders face allegations of sexual harassment against female wrestlers.
O’Brien, leveraging statistics, underscored the alarming rate of crimes against women in India, with 51 cases reported every hour, and questioned the effectiveness of Modi’s policies in addressing these issues. The criticism followed Modi’s comments at a rally in Barasat, where he evoked the “storm of Sandeshkhali” and the significant role of ‘Nari Shakti’ (women’s power) in opposing the ruling TMC in West Bengal.
The Trinamool leaders also pointed out the BJP’s representation of women in the Lok Sabha and their candidate list, further questioning the lack of action against BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accused of sexually harassing women wrestlers. Sushmita Dev, another Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP, raised concerns over the BJP’s treatment of convicts in the Bilkis Bano case, critiquing Modi’s silence on the harassment of female wrestlers by Delhi Police during protests.
The discourse extends to the political arena, with Trinamool leaders accusing the Prime Minister of exploiting women’s issues for rhetorical gains while failing to address the systemic problems affecting women’s safety in India. This challenge comes amid ongoing debates over women’s rights and safety across the nation, highlighting the complexities and political dynamics at play.
