Agency(New Delhi): Congress leader Kapil Sibal voiced concerns over the credibility of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), highlighting the agency’s alleged reluctance to act against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders involved in corruption cases across various states. Sibal accused the BJP of being singularly focused on removing opposition governments in different states.
Sibal remarked on multiple occasions, the ED has been made aware of criminal cases related to the BJP, yet no action has been taken. He questioned the selective enforcement by the ED, suggesting a bias in their operations. The Congress Rajya Sabha MP also claimed that the BJP aims to prevent the opposition from campaigning effectively in the Lok Sabha elections, believing that hindering their campaign efforts could have significant consequences.
These comments came in the context of recent political developments involving the arrest of former Jharkhand Minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha chief Hemant Soren. Soren was arrested by the ED after multiple summons in an alleged land scam case, following several hours of questioning. The Jharkhand High Court is set to hear a petition filed by Soren challenging his arrest on February 5. The case involves allegations of generating proceeds of crime through the forgery of official records, involving ‘fake sellers’ and purchasers, to acquire large land parcels.
Amidst this political unrest in Jharkhand, Champai Soren was sworn in as the Chief Minister of the state on Friday at the Raj Bhavan in Ranchi.
Kapil Sibal’s statements highlight a growing concern within the opposition regarding the impartiality of central agencies and the political dynamics at play in Indian states, particularly in the context of upcoming electoral battles.
