Agency(Gujarat): A controversy surrounding Union Minister Parshottam Rupala has intensified, with Rajput leaders in Gujarat taking a firm stance against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following Rupala’s alleged offensive comments about historical Rajput figures. The leaders have issued an ultimatum to the BJP: withdraw Rupala’s candidacy from the Rajkot Lok Sabha constituency or face widespread protests across the nation.
A meeting aimed at reconciling differences between the BJP and representatives of the Kshatriya (Rajput) community ended without resolution. Despite Rupala’s repeated apologies for his remarks, which suggested that historical Rajput rulers compromised their integrity under foreign and British rule, the community’s leaders are unwavering in their demand for his removal from the election race.
Senior BJP leader Bhupendrasinh Chudasama, present at the negotiation, expressed the party’s disappointment over the failed reconciliation efforts. According to Chudasama, the BJP’s attempts at seeking forgiveness were outright rejected by the community representatives, who insisted on Rupala’s withdrawal as their sole condition.
The dispute centers on Rupala’s comments, which have been perceived as disrespectful towards the Rajput community, historically known for their valor and significant contributions to India’s rich heritage. The Rajput Coordination Committee, a collective representing major Rajput organizations in Gujarat, has voiced a stern warning of initiating a widespread agitation against the BJP if their demands are not met.
Karansinh Chavda, the convener of the committee, highlighted the community’s resolve, stating that the only acceptable resolution is Rupala’s removal. Chavda emphasized the potential impact of their agitation, threatening to campaign against the BJP across all 26 Lok Sabha constituencies in Gujarat and extend their protest nationally if necessary.
This stand-off poses a significant challenge for the BJP as it prepares for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, with the Rajput community’s support being crucial for the party’s prospects in Gujarat. The leadership is now faced with a tough decision: whether to stand by Rupala or accede to the Rajput leaders’ demands to avert a possible electoral backlash.
