New Delhi (Agency): In a significant political development in Karnataka, the state’s BJP unit has been directed not to hinder party leaders who express a desire to join the ruling Congress party. This decision comes amid claims from Congress leaders that about 10 to 15 BJP leaders are set to join their party through ‘Operation Hast,’ a strategy aimed at drawing more politicians into the Congress fold ahead of the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.
According to sources, former Minister and BJP MLA S.T. Somashekar and Shivaram Hebbar, also a former minister and BJP MLA, are preparing to join the Congress party. Supporters of Somashekar, who have already joined the Congress, stated that his official transition to the party is a mere formality. Hebbar, reportedly discontented with the BJP leadership, is also expected to switch allegiance soon. Both leaders had initially joined the BJP from Congress in 2019 through ‘Operation Lotus.’
Furthermore, former minister V. Somanna, who has aspirations to become the State President, is said to be considering a move to Congress, contingent upon the party’s decision in this matter.
The decision to allow party members to leave without interference was made during a core committee meeting attended by several prominent BJP leaders, including former Chief Ministers B. S. Yediyurappa, Basasvaraja Bommai, and D. V. Sadananda Gowda. The leaders emphasized that the BJP is a cadre-based party, and its stability should not be affected by individual departures.
The BJP leaders also decided to request the party’s high command to make decisions regarding the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition and the post of State President.
The political landscape in Karnataka appears to be in flux, with potential changes on the horizon. With Yediyurappa becoming more active in party matters, workers are anticipating a positive turnaround in the party’s fortunes.
