Agency(New Delhi): Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, indirectly targeted Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for a controversial post on the Varna system, which has since been deleted. Kharge stated that the Chief Minister who spoke in such a manner should be “removed.”
In his address in the Rajya Sabha, Kharge refrained from naming the Chief Minister but made his disapproval clear. He quoted the BJP Chief Minister as saying, “Farming, cow rearing, and commerce are natural duties of the Vaishya, and it is the duty of a Shudra to serve Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas.” Kharge expressed his concern about such statements and called for the removal of a Chief Minister with such beliefs.
Kharge appealed to the Prime Minister to reconsider the presence of such individuals in the party and questioned whether this mentality aligned with the party’s claims of bringing social justice.
The controversy arose when the Assam Chief Minister posted the controversial statement on December 28, claiming that serving Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas was the natural duty of Shudras. The post was criticized by opposition leaders, leading to its deletion by the Assam CM, who explained it as an incorrect translation of a shloka from the Bhagavad Gita.
