Agency (New Delhi): JNU’s long-awaited student elections saw a decisive victory for the Left alliance, marking the election of the university’s first Dalit president in 30 years. After a four-year hiatus, the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) elections were held, culminating in the Left alliance securing all four key positions: president, vice president, general secretary, and joint secretary.
The election results were announced following the tabulation of 5,656 ballots, revealing the triumph of the Left bloc. AISA’s Dhananjay emerged victorious as the president, securing 2,598 votes, while his ABVP counterpart, Umesh Chandra Ajmeera, garnered 1,676 votes.
Avijit Ghosh of SFI, representing the United Left, clinched the vice president’s position with 2,409 votes, surpassing Deepika Sharma of the ABVP who received 1,482 votes.
Priyanshi Arya of BAPSA, endorsed by the Left, triumphed in the general secretary’s race with 2,887 votes, defeating Arjun Anand of the ABVP, who managed 1,961 votes. Mohammad Sajid, also from the Left, secured victory as joint secretary, surpassing his ABVP competitor Govind Dangi by 508 votes.
Dhananjay, hailing from Gaya, Bihar, and the son of a retired policeman, expressed gratitude following his historic win. He emphasized the rejection of divisive politics by JNU students and vowed to prioritize issues like women’s safety, funding cuts, scholarship increments, and campus infrastructure.
This landslide victory not only underscores the dominance of the Left alliance in JNU but also marks a significant milestone in Dalit representation within the university’s leadership.
