Agency (New Delhi): Kishori Lal Sharma, the newly elected Member of Parliament from Amethi, celebrated a significant victory, defeating BJP candidate and ex-Union minister Smriti Irani by over 1.67 lakh votes. Sharma garnered slightly over 5.39 lakh votes, while Irani secured 3.72 lakh votes.
“This is a victory of and for the people of Amethi. This is a victory of the Gandhi family,” Sharma declared. He has been actively involved in Raebareli for over four decades and associated with the Amethi seat since 1983, when he began collaborating with the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on a youth program.
When asked about his opponent, Sharma remarked that he had nothing to say about her, as her electoral loss was a clear message from the people.
Expressing his gratitude, Sharma stated, “The victory matters this time as it means Amethi is back with Congress. The cadre supported me wholeheartedly in the short campaign period. No vote division occurred this time, and the SP (Samajwadi Party)-Congress alliance worked effectively on the ground. Priyankaji (Gandhi Vadra) and Rahul Gandhiji campaigned for me, holding rallies alongside SP in Amethi, which mobilized the people.”
Sharma, who was in Delhi to meet the Gandhi family, emphasized his commitment to serving the people of both Amethi and Raebareli. “One of Amethi’s Assembly segments falls under Raebareli district. I will move between the two constituencies and abide by Rahul Gandhi’s advice for me,” Sharma said. Of the five Assembly segments under Amethi Lok Sabha seat, Salon is part of Raebareli district.
For Sharma, the development of Amethi and Raebareli is paramount. “Several projects have been stalled in the constituency. We aim to improve roads, infrastructure, and industries based on the people’s wishes,” said Sharma, who previously worked in the constituency for Rajiv Gandhi and former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, ensuring her record-setting victory in 1999.
Sharma is hopeful that if the INDIA bloc comes to power, many more development projects will be initiated in Amethi and Raebareli. He remains dedicated to continuing his work in the constituency.
