Agency (New Delhi): In a striking statement on Tuesday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge labeled Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “jhoothon ka sardar” (chief of liars), asserting that Modi’s re-election would mean the end of elections and political representation for Dalits, tribals, backward classes, and women. Kharge’s remarks came during a rally in Maharajganj, Uttar Pradesh, in support of Congress candidate Virendra Chaudhary.
Kharge accused Modi of failing to deliver on his promises and perpetuating falsehoods. Speaking in the presence of several INDIA bloc leaders, including Samajwadi Party (SP) national general secretary Shivpal Yadav, Kharge declared, “The prime minister lies. Modi is a liar, and I am saying it again and again that Modi is the chief of liars.”
He further stated that if Modi returned to power, it would spell the end of elections in India and eliminate candidates from marginalized communities. Emphasizing the ideological nature of the elections, Kharge said, “We are not fighting against any individual person, be it Modi or Yogi. This is not a personal fight.”
Kharge defended the Congress’s contributions over the past 70 years, arguing that Modi’s rise to power was possible because the Congress had established and protected democracy. He accused the current government of trying to dismantle democracy and break the Constitution. “Dalits, tribals, backward classes, farmers, and intellectuals of the country will not let you break the constitution,” he asserted.
Targeting Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, who represents Maharajganj, Kharge criticized the lack of development in the district. He pointed out that despite its political importance and border with Nepal, the district headquarters still lacked a railway connection. He also lamented the closure of sugar mills during Modi’s regime and questioned the silence of the chief minister on these issues. “They talk of double engines, one of which has failed and another has derailed,” Kharge said, comparing the BJP’s performance unfavorably to the achievements of former Congress prime ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.
Kharge also criticized the BJP over the bullet train project, questioning the expenditure of a Rs 1 lakh crore loan from Japan and the absence of the promised train. He accused the BJP of taking credit for Congress’s developmental works and likened the BJP’s practices to a “laundry” that cleanses the tainted reputations of its members.
The Congress president alleged that the BJP abuses central agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to force “tainted” leaders to join their party. He mocked Modi and Shah’s alleged practice of “washing” tainted politicians clean, likening it to a washing machine that purifies individuals instead of clothes.
Kharge concluded by asserting that the BJP rules through fear and intimidation.
