Agency (New Delhi): On Thursday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for emphasizing ‘mandir-masjid’ and other divisive topics 421 times during his Lok Sabha election campaign. This claim comes despite the Election Commission of India’s directive against appealing for votes based on caste and religion.
In a press conference on the final day of the seventh phase of the Lok Sabha elections, Kharge highlighted that Modi, in his last 15 days of speeches, mentioned the Congress party 232 times and his own name 758 times. However, he did not address the issue of unemployment even once.
Kharge expressed confidence that the INDIA bloc would secure a clear majority, promising to deliver an inclusive, nationalistic government. “We believe that on 4 June, the public will vote for an alternative government,” stated the Congress leader. “The public has supported our view that another term for this government could signify the end of democracy.”
Kharge also criticized Modi’s remarks in an interview, where the PM suggested that global recognition of Mahatma Gandhi grew only after the release of Richard Attenborough’s 1982 film. Kharge insinuated that Modi might not be well-versed in Gandhi’s history, emphasizing that the Mahatma is globally renowned.
