Agency(New Delhi): Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge has launched a pointed critique against the BJP, linking its ideological roots to historical figures who he claims supported the British colonial rule and cooperated with the Muslim League during India’s struggle for independence. In a fiery discourse, Kharge highlighted these allegations amidst ongoing political debates surrounding the BJP’s accusations of appeasement in the Congress manifesto.
“Modi-Shah’s ideological ancestors, notably Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, opposed Mahatma Gandhi’s 1942 Quit India Movement,” Kharge stated, referencing the historical event chaired by Maulana Azad. He elaborated that Mukherjee not only formed governments in Bengal, Sindh, and the North-West Frontier Province with the Muslim League but also actively communicated with British officials to undermine the Quit India movement and suppress Congress activities.
Kharge questioned the integrity of BJP’s current leadership by drawing parallels with Mukherjee’s actions, accusing them of spreading falsehoods about the Congress manifesto. He mocked the BJP’s reliance on the RSS, suggesting a symbolic reunion with their ‘best friend’ — the Muslim League, as he perceived a desperation within the BJP due to declining electoral support.
In his defense of the Congress manifesto, Kharge emphasized its reflection of the aspirations of India’s 140 crore citizens, asserting that it represents a collective strength capable of correcting what he described as “Modi ji’s 10 years of injustice.”
This exchange comes as both parties intensify their campaigns for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, with Congress projecting confidence in overcoming BJP’s electoral strategies, which they claim revert to divisive Hindu-Muslim narratives. The political climate remains charged as parties articulate their visions for India’s future amidst historical accusations and contemporary challenges.
