Agency (New Delhi): The INDIA alliance convened in the national capital on Saturday evening to discuss the implications of the Lok Sabha results. The coalition resolved to challenge the “fascist rule” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP-led government and expressed openness to forming a government in the future.
After a two-hour meeting at his residence, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge addressed the media, delivering a unified message from the allies. Kharge read from a joint statement, thanking the public for their overwhelming support for the INDIA bloc.
Kharge emphasized that the people’s mandate rejected the BJP’s politics of hate, corruption, and deprivation. “This is a mandate in defense of the Constitution of India and against price rise, unemployment, and crony capitalism, and also to save democracy,” he stated.
Kharge underlined the alliance’s readiness to oppose the BJP, saying, “The INDIA bloc will continue to fight against the fascist rule of the BJP led by Modi.” He added, “We will take appropriate steps at the appropriate time to realize the people’s desire not to be ruled by the BJP’s government.”
This statement is significant amidst speculation that the INDIA alliance may reach out to NDA allies like the TDP and the JD(U), whose support is vital for the Modi-led government to continue.
The INDIA bloc is determined to question Modi’s legitimacy as prime minister, arguing that he has lost the mandate to hold the position. The meeting stressed the importance of maintaining a united front both inside and outside Parliament.
In his opening remarks, Kharge asserted that Modi retaining the prime ministership subverts the people’s will. “The mandate is decisively against Mr. Modi, against him and the substance and style of his politics. It is a huge political loss for him personally apart from being a clear moral defeat as well,” he remarked.
While no immediate efforts are being made to gather numbers, the alliance is open to welcoming more parties. Kharge articulated this by stating, “The INDIA alliance welcomes all parties which share its fundamental commitment to the values enshrined in the Preamble to our Constitution and to its many provisions for economic, social, and political justice.”
