New Delhi (Agency): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Delhi has accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of putting children’s safety at risk in government-run schools. The allegation comes in the wake of the death of a Class 12 girl who reportedly jumped off the third floor of her school building on August 29. The girl was a student at SBBM Sarvodaya Vidyalaya in the Civil Lines area and later died during treatment at a hospital.
At a press conference, Delhi BJP secretary Bansuri Swaraj charged that the AAP government was attempting to “hush up” this tragic incident. Swaraj also mentioned another alleged episode involving the sexual assault of two students in a Rohini government school. “The AAP government is suppressing the incident of the death of the girl student of its school in the Civil Lines area that is hardly 500 meters away from Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence,” said Swaraj.
No immediate response has been received from the AAP government or the party regarding these allegations.
Swaraj further brought attention to an incident where 70 students fell ill after consuming midday meals in a Dabri school. She questioned the AAP government’s claim of having revolutionized the education system and described the government as “insensitive” towards students. Swaraj stated there seems to be a lack of arrangements for counseling and proper teacher-student communication in AAP-run schools.
The BJP secretary also criticized Education Minister Atishi for her inability to manage the School Management Committee and the newly formed School Student Management Committee effectively. These committees were intended to provide counseling support to students. “Such incidents also expose Education Minister Atishi’s claims of running the School Management Committee and newly formed School Student Management Committee to provide counseling,” Swaraj said, demanding Atishi’s resignation over these issues.
Delhi BJP media relations head Vikram Mittal was also present at the press conference to support these claims.
The allegations put forth by the Delhi BJP raise significant concerns about the safety and well-being of students in government-run schools. It remains to be seen how the AAP government will respond to these allegations and what steps will be taken to ensure the safety of students in the future.
