Agency (New Delhi): On Monday, the Congress party took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi following RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s remarks about the persistent unrest in Manipur. Bhagwat expressed concern over the lack of peace in the northeastern state, suggesting that the situation should be a priority.
Manipur has been embroiled in violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May last year, resulting in around 200 deaths and thousands of displaced individuals. Fresh violence was reported recently from Jiribam. Despite the ongoing strife, the state has not seen a resolution.
In a post on X, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh commented, “If not the ‘one-third’ Prime Minister’s conscience or the repeated demands of the people of Manipur, perhaps Mr. Bhagwat can prevail upon the former RSS office-bearer to go to Manipur.”
Addressing RSS trainees at an event in Nagpur, Bhagwat highlighted the need to move beyond election rhetoric and address national issues, specifically pointing to the continued conflict in Manipur. “Manipur is waiting for peace for the last one year. There was peace in Manipur 10 years ago. It felt like gun culture had finished there. But the state has suddenly seen violence,” he remarked. Bhagwat emphasized the importance of prioritizing the situation in Manipur and focusing on resolving the state’s issues.
