Agency (Karnataka): On Sunday, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of resorting to “fear mongering” amid a series of rallies in Karnataka, following what he described as a “washout” for the BJP in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections.
Ramesh criticized the performance of BJP MPs from Karnataka, questioning their commitment to their constituents. He highlighted their lower than average attendance in Parliament and lack of initiative in addressing state issues such as MGNREGA fund releases and drought relief.
Ramesh also pointed out that the central government has delayed the release of crucial funds for drought relief in Karnataka, providing less than 20% of the requested Rs 18,171 crore only after being compelled by a Supreme Court directive. This, he said, reflects a disregard for the state’s severe drought conditions affecting most of its talukas.
Furthermore, Ramesh accused the Modi government of stalling major water projects in Karnataka, such as the Upper Bhadra Project and the Mahadayi-Kalasa Banduri Nala Project, despite previous promises and budget allocations. This delay has exacerbated the water scarcity issues in the state.
“The Modi government’s indifference to the plight of Karnataka is evident in its handling of these crucial projects and the delayed disaster relief,” Ramesh stated, challenging the Prime Minister to address these issues publicly.
Ramesh’s remarks come as the Congress and BJP intensify their campaigns in Karnataka, with each party aiming to sway voters ahead of upcoming electoral phases. The Congress is positioning itself as attentive to Karnataka’s needs in contrast to what they describe as BJP’s neglect and politicized fear tactics.
