Agency (New Delhi): The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accused the BJP on Monday of sponsoring threatening graffiti against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, which were found scribbled inside metro trains in Delhi. The party has sought a meeting with the Election Commission on the issue and has sent a request for representation via email.
A senior police officer stated that the matter is under investigation. Addressing a press conference, AAP leader Atishi claimed that the BJP is targeting Kejriwal because they fear losing all seven seats in Delhi. “They got him arrested on March 21, and when he was in Tihar jail, they stopped his insulin for 15 days, forcing us to approach the court. After his release, they used Swati Maliwal to target him, but that conspiracy failed as the assault allegations were proven false,” she alleged.
Atishi further claimed that graffiti threatening Kejriwal were scribbled inside three metro stations: Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, and Patel Nagar. She said, “The images of the graffiti have also been uploaded on social media. These stations are under CCTV surveillance and have round-the-clock security. Why are the police not acting on it? Where is the Cyber Cell? This shows that this is being orchestrated by the BJP.”
Images circulating on social media showed graffiti inside metro trains and on signboards at Patel Nagar and Rajiv Chowk stations, some of which carried an Instagram handle. It is unclear whether the graffiti were initially shared from this handle.
Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva responded by urging the police and Election Commission to double Kejriwal’s security, alleging that AAP might orchestrate an attack on him to gain public sympathy before the May 25 Lok Sabha polls in the city. Sachdeva accused AAP of diverting attention from the assault incident involving Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal at the Delhi Chief Minister’s residence. “My only question to Kejriwal is when will he break his silence over the Maliwal assault incident in his house?” Sachdeva asked at a press conference.
Delhi cabinet minister Saurabh Bharadwaj stated that AAP has emailed a representation to the Election Commission seeking a discussion on the issue. He expressed concern over the threats to Kejriwal, noting that no action has been taken by Delhi Police or the metro authorities despite CCTV coverage. Bharadwaj accused the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) of being behind the threats, saying, “If any harm happens to him, the PM will be responsible.”
He criticized the Delhi Police for their handling of matters related to the party. “Police immediately swung into action on two calls recently and even shared the DD entry with the media. But after the graffiti incident, did Delhi police increase Kejriwal’s security? Was Kejriwal apprised of the matter? Or was the media informed about this by the police?” Bharadwaj questioned.
AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh echoed his colleagues, alleging, “The PMO and the BJP are planning a very big attack on Kejriwal. Ever since Kejriwal has come out of jail, they have been making repeated efforts to attack him.”
