Agency (New Delhi): The Uttarakhand government, led by Pushkar Singh Dhami, has taken significant steps towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state, following its approval by the Uttarakhand Assembly. The UCC aims to ensure equality and uniformity across different religions in matters of marriage, inheritance, divorce, and other related aspects.
A new committee, consisting of five members, has been formed to draft the guidelines and modalities for the UCC’s implementation. This committee includes three experts from the previous panel, signifying continuity and expertise in the process. The members are retired IAS officer Shatrughan Singh, Professor Surekha Dangwal, social activist Manu Gaur, ADG Amit Sinha, and Divisional Commissioner Ajay Mishra. The committee has received approval from the Governor to proceed with laying down the rules.
One of the key aspects of this initiative is the emphasis on digital propagation of the UCC guidelines. The committee is tasked with creating an online portal and mobile applications to facilitate easy and quick access to the guidelines. This digital approach aims to empower the residents of Uttarakhand, allowing them to lodge complaints or grievances from their residences or remote locations, thereby avoiding bureaucratic hassles and ensuring prompt solutions.
Uttarakhand is the first state in India to clear the rollout of the UCC. With the Assembly’s approval, it’s only a matter of days before the law becomes operational. This move marks a significant step towards legal uniformity and equality in the state.
