Agency (Uttarakhand): Trivendra Singh Rawat, the former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, has been granted a significant political lifeline as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) officially announced him as their candidate for the Haridwar Lok Sabha constituency. This decision comes as Rawat’s first notable political assignment following his abrupt ousting from the Chief Minister’s office in March 2021, just shy of completing four years of tenure.
The party’s choice to field Rawat over Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, who previously secured the Haridwar seat in the 2014 and 2019 general elections, signifies a pivotal shift and a fresh confidence in Rawat’s electoral appeal. Rawat led Uttarakhand from March 2017 until his replacement by Tirath Singh Rawat, whose brief tenure was succeeded by Pushkar Singh Dhami, the current Chief Minister enjoying his second term.
Expressing gratitude towards the party leadership, Rawat particularly thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP National President JP Nadda for entrusting him with this opportunity. Contrary to the notion that his nomination may signify an end to his political exile, Rawat highlighted his engagement with organizational duties and extensive travel during this interim period as valuable experiences.
Rawat’s history of electoral successes from the Doiwala assembly seat, which falls under the Haridwar Lok Sabha constituency, in 2002, 2007, and 2017, underscores his longstanding political influence and the strategic importance of his candidacy for the BJP in the upcoming elections.
