Agency(New Delhi): Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, on Wednesday, addressed the often-asked question about the alternative to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, deeming it “irrelevant” within the context of India’s parliamentary system. Tharoor clarified that in a parliamentary democracy like India’s, the electorate votes for a party or a coalition of parties rather than an individual leader. This system, according to Tharoor, inherently promotes a governance model based on a set of principles and convictions that safeguard India’s diversity, pluralism, and inclusive growth.
Through a post on X, Tharoor articulated his perspective, stressing that the real alternative to Modi would be a collective of experienced, capable, and diverse leaders committed to addressing the populace’s concerns without succumbing to the pitfalls of individual ego.
Tharoor’s commentary places significant emphasis on the notion of collective leadership as opposed to the charismatic individual leadership often highlighted in political narratives. He suggested that the selection of a prime minister within such a collective framework is a matter of secondary importance, with the primary focus being on the protection of India’s democratic values and its rich diversity.
The Congress leader, currently seeking a fourth term in office from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, thus frames the discourse on political leadership within the broader context of democratic principles and collective problem-solving, positioning these as the core tenets of the alternative political vision he advocates.
