Agency(Tamil Nadu): Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has openly criticized the DMK for propagating what she terms as false narratives regarding the Katchatheevu islet, ceded to Sri Lanka in 1974. Emphasizing historical context, Sitharaman pointed out that the DMK’s then-leadership under M. Karunanidhi was informed about the Congress government’s decision but chose not to object. This issue has resurfaced as a point of contention ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu, with both the Congress and DMK facing criticism from the BJP.
Sitharaman questioned the opposition’s reluctance to hold the Congress accountable for the cession of Katchatheevu, which has been a long-standing issue impacting the lives and security of Indian fishermen. The BJP leader accused the DMK of hypocritically attempting to shift blame onto the BJP, despite their historical silence and inaction during the UPA government’s tenure, which also saw controversial decisions like the ban on ‘Jallikattu’.
In response to queries on why the BJP government hasn’t resolved the Katchatheevu issue during its rule, Sitharaman highlighted the central government’s efforts in protecting Indian fishermen’s interests, including preventing the execution of a fisherman in Sri Lanka and facilitating the release of detained fishermen.
Sitharaman dismissed the accusation of politicizing Katchatheevu for electoral gains, framing it as a matter of national security and sovereignty. She underscored the importance of addressing the fishermen’s plight, intertwined with the Katchatheevu dispute, as a matter beyond mere political point-scoring.
Addressing allegations from Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister M.K. Stalin regarding inadequate central support during the 2023 floods, Sitharaman provided specifics on the financial assistance provided, including NDRF funds and a special grant aimed at flood mitigation efforts. She called on the DMK government to account for these funds, suggesting that their effective utilization could have mitigated the impact of Cyclone Michaung.
Sitharaman’s remarks come amid heightened political rhetoric as Tamil Nadu prepares for the Lok Sabha polls, with parties leveraging historical grievances and current challenges to rally support. Her defense of the BJP’s record on national security, fishermen’s welfare, and disaster relief contrasts with the DMK’s critique, setting the stage for a contentious electoral battle in the state.
