Agency (Kolkata, West Bengal): The Sikh community in West Bengal organized a protest outside the BJP central office in Kolkata. The demonstration was in response to alleged remarks made against a Sikh police officer, Jasprit Singh, in Sandeshkhali. According to Gurmeet Singh, one of the protestors, some BJP leaders reportedly labeled the officer as a Khalistani.
The protestors demanded apologies from top BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. They expressed their intention to continue protesting until they receive these apologies. Gurmeet Singh emphasized the peaceful nature of their demonstration and the community’s resolve to express themselves on the issue.
The protest reflects the Sikh community’s strong reaction to the alleged comments. While BJP leader Rahul Sinha has apologized for the matter, the community has not accepted his apology and insists on receiving apologies from the Prime Minister and the Home Minister. This incident highlights the sensitivity around remarks concerning community identities and the significant response they can evoke.
