Agency (New Delhi): Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar envisions a significant reshaping of the opposition landscape following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In an interview with The Indian Express, Pawar observed that several regional parties might closely align with Congress in the coming years, with some even considering merging with the national party if it serves their interests.
When asked whether his party might merge with Congress, Pawar stated that he sees no ideological difference between the Congress and NCP. “Ideologically, we belong to the Gandhi, Nehru line of thinking,” he said. However, he clarified that he was not making any commitments without consulting his colleagues, emphasizing that any strategic decisions would be made collectively.
Pawar also mentioned that Shiv Sena (UBT), led by Uddhav Thackeray, is positive about collaborating with like-minded parties. He noted that many political parties dislike the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, suggesting that these parties are starting to unite against the ruling party.
Pawar praised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, highlighting his substantial support within his party and his ability to build rapport with regional parties. “All I am saying is that the situation demands that we work together, that is the general thinking (in the Opposition) – and we should give a stable government if we are elected,” Pawar said.
This potential consolidation of opposition forces underscores a strategic shift aimed at presenting a united front against the BJP in future elections.
