Agency(Haryana): In a significant political development in Haryana, Nayab Singh Saini’s BJP-led government secured a victory in the confidence motion through a voice vote in the state assembly. This victory came just one day after Saini was sworn in as the Chief Minister. Following the successful trust vote, Manohar Lal Khattar, the former Chief Minister, announced his resignation as an assembly member, fueling speculation about his potential candidacy in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Karnal.
During the special session for the trust vote, members of the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) exited the assembly. The JJP, a former ally in the Khattar government, had instructed its legislators to abstain from the vote. The motion was presented by Speaker Gian Chand Gupta and passed, despite the absence of JJP’s MLAs and the sole Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) member.
The Congress party’s request for a secret ballot vote was denied by the Speaker, who cited the absence of such provision in the assembly’s rules. The discussion on the confidence motion spanned two hours, with Saini affirming his government’s endorsement by both the assembly members and Haryana’s populace.
With 41 BJP members and the support of six independents and the Haryana Lokhit Party’s lone MLA, the Saini government stood on solid ground, independent of JJP’s backing. Meanwhile, Ajay Singh Chautala, leader of the JJP, remarked on his party’s commitment to its alliance duties and stated that the party’s departure from the BJP alliance was not driven by a thirst for power but was a result of unmet demands for Lok Sabha seats.
Reflecting on his tenure and his recent appointment, Chief Minister Saini lauded Khattar’s governance and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, highlighting his humble origins and the unique honor the BJP has bestowed upon him by elevating him to the state’s leadership.
Khattar’s resignation speech as an MLA touched on his dedication to Haryana’s service, embracing the inevitability of change. The assembly session also witnessed debates on the urgency and motives behind the session’s convening, with opposition leaders calling for the dissolution of the assembly and a fresh mandate in light of the recent governmental changes and challenges facing the state.
