Agency(New Delhi): Robert Vadra, businessman and husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, has shown a keen interest in contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Amethi, voicing that the constituents expect him to step into politics and represent them. In a notable conversation with ANI, Vadra articulated his critique of Union Minister Smriti Irani, the current MP from Amethi, accusing her of failing the expectations of the people who regret electing her over Rahul Gandhi in the 2019 elections.
Vadra, who has hinted at his political aspirations in the past, emphasized the deep-rooted connection and legacy of the Gandhi family in Amethi and the surrounding regions. He mentioned that the people of Amethi harbor a strong desire for the return of a Gandhi family member to represent them, ensuring victory by a significant margin. He voiced a preference for Priyanka Gandhi to enter Parliament before him, noting his widespread encouragement from various political parties and individuals across party lines to join politics.
He clarified that the decision regarding candidacy from Amethi and Rae Bareli would rest with the Congress leadership, sidestepping a direct assertion of his or Priyanka Gandhi’s candidacy. Vadra reminisced about his campaigning efforts alongside Priyanka Gandhi in Amethi during the 1999 Lok Sabha polls, highlighting their deep engagement and hard work with the local community and party workers.
Addressing the performance of Smriti Irani, Vadra criticized her for not being sufficiently present in the constituency, neglecting its progress, and engaging in baseless allegations against the Gandhi family. He echoed the sentiment of Amethi’s residents, who he claims seek the reinstatement of a Gandhi family member to foster the area’s development and progress, akin to past contributions.
As the Congress has yet to announce its candidates for the crucial seats of Amethi and Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh, Vadra’s remarks have sparked further speculation about the potential candidates and the strategic decisions ahead for the Congress in the forthcoming elections.
