Agency(New Delhi): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has launched a sharp critique against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of waiving Rs 16 lakh crore of debts for billionaires, and argued that the government should now focus on benefiting the common man. “Narendra Modi waived off Rs 16 lakh crore of a few billionaires in one go. With this much money, a revolutionary scheme like MGNREGA could have been run for 24 years,” Gandhi stated in a post on X, challenging the government’s fiscal priorities.
Gandhi’s comments come as he seeks to contrast the Congress party’s social welfare strategies with the current administration’s economic policies. He highlighted that the funds used for the billionaires’ debt waivers could support extensive social welfare programs, questioning the transparency and fairness of the BJP’s economic governance.
Meanwhile, Union Minister Smriti Irani has responded with allegations against Gandhi, claiming he has sought support from the banned outfit Popular Front of India (PFI) for his election campaign in Wayanad, Kerala. Irani accused Gandhi of insulting the people of Amethi—her constituency and a former stronghold of the Gandhi family—by aligning with a group accused of planning violent acts.
“These allegations need to be addressed by Rahul Gandhi, especially to the people of Amethi, where significant developmental changes have been made under PM Modi’s leadership,” Irani stated.
The political exchange highlights the intensified rhetoric as India approaches the general elections, set to be held from April 19 to June 1. The elections will determine the composition of the 18th Lok Sabha, with results announced on June 4. The discourse reflects the broader debates about economic policy and communal harmony shaping India’s political landscape.
