Agency(New Delhi): In a dramatic escalation of political tension in New Delhi, BJP leaders and activists faced off against police forces, enduring water cannons and detentions, as they marched towards the ITO Secretariat demanding the resignation of the arrested Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal. Parallelly, AAP supporters were detained by police near Patel Chowk Metro station as they protested against Kejriwal’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) related to a money laundering case tied to an excise policy.
Kejriwal, detained since March 21, will remain under ED custody until March 28. The arrest prompted a large-scale protest from the BJP, resulting in 57 detentions, including that of the party’s Delhi unit chief, Virendra Sachdeva. Sachdeva criticized the AAP government’s legitimacy, provocatively questioning Kejriwal’s moral right to govern from jail and comparing his situation with past chief ministers who resigned amid corruption allegations.
The BJP protest saw a notable assembly of its leaders, including Manoj Tiwari and several MPs and MLAs, criticizing the functioning of a government led by an incarcerated chief minister. Simultaneously, AAP leaders claimed that Kejriwal continued to issue governmental directives from custody, ensuring the public’s access to essential services, a move criticized by the BJP as a political drama.
The protests underscored not just a political rivalry but a significant legal and ethical debate about governance amid legal scrutiny. With BJP demanding Kejriwal’s resignation on moral grounds, and AAP rallying against what they perceive as a politically motivated arrest, the situation in Delhi highlights the intense political and legal battles that lie ahead.
The events led to a substantial police response, with barricades, water cannons, and detentions marking the efforts to control the demonstrations. The incident reflects the heightened political tensions in the capital, revealing the deep divides and the urgent call for legal and moral resolutions in Indian politics.
