Agency (New Delhi): The President of India, Smt. Draupadi Murmu, addressed a conference of tribal women connected with self-help groups at the Aadi Mahotsav in Beneshwar Dham on 14th February 2024. The event was a significant step towards empowering tribal women and showcasing their contributions to the nation’s social and economic fabric.
During her address, President Murmu highlighted the historical importance of Beneshwar Dham, located at the confluence of the Mahi, Som, and Jakham rivers, and its spiritual significance. She paid tribute to the valorous history of Rajasthan and its diverse culture, embodied in the ethos of ‘Padharo Mhare Des’ (Welcome to our land).
The President reminisced about the gallant history of tribal warriors in Rajasthan, particularly their substantial contribution to Maharana Pratap’s army. She honored the tribal women who, in history, willingly sent their husbands and sons to serve the motherland. She praised the modern tribal women who continue to set exemplary standards in perseverance and progress.
Referring to her visit to Jaisalmer in December last year for the Lakhpati Didi Sammelan, the President observed the positive changes in women’s lives after joining self-help groups. She acknowledged the challenges women, especially in impoverished and tribal areas, face in obtaining credit or loans. The President commended the Rajasthan government’s efforts in linking women with self-help groups to resolve these issues, thus aiding in creating working, human, and social capital.
The President underlined the constitutional provisions and other legislations ensuring equality of opportunity for the tribal community. She stressed the importance of their self-governance as provided under the 5th Schedule of the Constitution.
Highlighting the initiatives like Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Adarsh Gram Yojana (PM-JAGY) and Pradhan Mantri Van Dhan Yojana, she emphasized the importance of economic development for the tribal community. The National Scheduled Tribes Finance and Development Corporation’s Micro Credit Scheme and the Tribal Mahila Sashaktikaran Yojana were also mentioned as critical steps towards empowering tribal women.
The President expressed her confidence in the continued and significant contributions of tribal women to India’s progress and wished them a bright future. She concluded her speech with a note of gratitude and national pride.
