Agency (Nainital, Uttarakhand): In response to the violence that erupted in Banbhoolpura, Haldwani, during an anti-encroachment drive, four companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed to the area. The Uttarakhand Police reported that two companies of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) from Udham Singh Nagar have also reached Haldwani to assist in managing the situation.
Inspector General Nilesh Anand Bharne, the spokesperson for Police Headquarters, confirmed the deployment of the paramilitary personnel to the violence-affected area. A curfew has been imposed in Banbhoolpura by the District Magistrate, and a shoot-at-sight order has been issued against those identified as rioters.
The violent outbreak occurred around 4 pm when a joint team from the district administration and police was executing a court-ordered anti-encroachment operation in Banbhoolpura. The situation escalated when some miscreants began pelting stones at the officials and engaged in arson. There were also reports of illegal firearms being used against the police.
Uttarakhand Director General of Police (DGP) Abhinav Kumar revealed that a request for additional central paramilitary personnel was made to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) following the outbreak of violence. The MHA responded by providing four companies of additional central forces.
Despite the tense situation, DGP Kumar assured that the circumstances were under control. In the meantime, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has appealed to the public to maintain peace and calm in the region.
The swift deployment of paramilitary forces underscores the government’s commitment to restoring order and ensuring public safety. The enforcement of stringent measures, including the curfew and shoot-at-sight orders, reflect the seriousness of the situation and the government’s resolve to prevent further escalation of violence.
