Agency(New Delhi): Kalamandalam Sathyabhama, a distinguished figure in the classical dance form of Mohiniyattam, has stirred controversy with her racially charged comments against fellow dancer Dr. RLV Ramakrishnan. During an interview with a YouTube channel, Sathyabhama critiqued an artist’s suitability for Mohiniyattam based on their physical appearance, making remarks that have been widely interpreted as targeting Ramakrishnan. The incident has triggered a strong response from various quarters, including politicians, cultural organizations, and social media users.
Sathyabhama’s contentious statements highlighted that a performer in Mohiniyattam should be enchanting and criticized the appearance of a male dancer, likening his skin color to that of a crow. She further commented on the aesthetics of a man performing Mohiniyattam with wide-apart legs as repulsive unless they possess a certain level of physical appeal.
These comments led to a public outcry, with State ministers R Bindu and Veena George, as well as Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, V D Satheesan, denouncing Sathyabhama’s remarks. The controversy escalated with the Congress party organizing a protest march in Chalakudy, Thrissur district, where Ramakrishnan resides.
Ramakrishnan, who has an impressive academic background in Mohiniyattam, including a PhD from Kalamandalam, expressed his distress over the remarks and announced his intention to pursue legal action. He highlighted the ongoing struggle of individuals from scheduled castes in the classical dance community and called for accountability.
In defense of her statements, Sathyabhama insisted she had not named anyone specifically and stood by her opinions without regret. She criticized the media for exacerbating the issue. However, her comments have not only led to public demonstrations but also sparked a discussion on inclusivity, discrimination, and the evolving standards of classical arts in contemporary society.
Leaders and cultural figures have rallied in support of Ramakrishnan, emphasizing that art transcends physical appearances and societal prejudices. They praised his contributions to Mohiniyattam, recognizing him as a reformer who challenges traditional norms and expands the boundaries of the art form.
