Agency(Salem): On Tuesday, 19 March 2024, members from several political parties, including the Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPI(M), Congress, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam (DVK), were arrested following a black flag demonstration against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Salem, Tamil Nadu.
The Prime Minister’s visit was primarily for a public meeting with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at Gajjalnaickenpatti. However, the protest took shape at Kondalampatti Roundabout, where participants voiced their dissent against the Prime Minister and his party. In response, the Kondalampatti police detained 85 protestors, temporarily holding them at a marriage hall.
In a parallel protest, members of the VCK and IUML gathered at Fort Maidan near the Salem Corporation Office, where they too were met with arrests. A total of 38 participants from this demonstration were detained and subsequently released after being held at another marriage hall.
These arrests underscore the tension surrounding the Prime Minister’s visit and highlight the continuing political divide in Salem. The collective action from various political parties signals a unified stance against the current administration, reflecting broader discontent within certain segments of the Tamil Nadu population.
