Agency(New Delhi): In a recent development in Karnataka politics, the state government passed a resolution criticizing the Central Government’s approach to tax devolution, leading to a significant protest by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This event, taking place in Bengaluru, Karnataka, highlights the escalating tension between the state and central governments over financial allocations.
The state’s Minister, Priyank Kharge, expressed disappointment with the BJP’s walkout, interpreting it as a lack of concern for the state and its farmers’ welfare. He emphasized that the Karnataka government had passed two critical resolutions on Thursday. The first resolution calls on the central government to establish fair legislation regarding the minimum support price for all crops, addressing the long-standing demands of farmers. The second resolution focuses on urging the Centre for an equitable and non-discriminatory distribution of financial resources, ensuring justice and development for the people of Karnataka.
Kharge’s statement was reinforced by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who voiced concerns over the perceived injustice in resource allocation by the Central Government. According to Shivakumar, Karnataka has not received its due share from the Finance Commission, prompting the state to appeal for fair and adequate funding.
In response, the BJP accused the Congress-led Karnataka government of duplicity and promoting a political agenda. Former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai criticized the Congress for not taking action when the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) was in power. He highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, shortly after assuming office, increased Karnataka’s share to 42%, demonstrating federal cooperation. Bommai also pointed out the state’s inadequate representation under the UPA government, suggesting that the current protest is driven more by political motives than genuine concern for the state’s welfare.
This political standoff underscores the ongoing debate over federal cooperation and resource distribution in India. As both parties stand their ground, the resolution’s impact on Karnataka’s development and its relationship with the Central Government remains to be seen.
