Agency(New Delhi): In a perplexing series of events that unfolded in Mangaluru, IDBI Bank has requested the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to look into a complicated incident involving the misdelivery of ₹5 crore. The situation came to light during an Income Tax department raid on a business near Kankanady, Mangaluru, where it was discovered that a sum meant for a different transaction had erroneously been delivered.
This bizarre scenario began in mid-December 2023 when Income Tax officials intercepted a cash delivery vehicle at a business establishment, leading to the seizure of ₹5 crore originally belonging to IDBI Bank. The intended recipient, a longstanding bank customer who had applied for a gold loan, was supposedly uninvolved in this transaction, raising questions about the destination of the substantial sum.
Further inquiry revealed that the customer had initiated a loan application against gold held in the bank’s Kankanady branch but had not completed the process. Moreover, bank officials were unable to justify the withdrawal of such a significant amount, adding layers of mystery to the incident.
Complicating matters, the customer later accused two bank employees of withholding the gold he pledged and unlawfully debiting ₹61 lakh from his account. Following these allegations, the implicated bank officials have since evaded capture, their anticipatory bail pleas denied by a Mangaluru court.
The misappropriation, initially investigated by local police, has been elevated to the Cybercrime, Economic Offences, and Narcotics division due to the substantial sum involved, surpassing ₹25 lakh.
IDBI Bank’s decision to involve the CBI highlights the complex and serious nature of this fraud, involving a misdirected cash delivery and accusations of internal connivance leading to a financial discrepancy totaling around ₹6 crore. Despite numerous attempts to obtain a comment, IDBI Bank has maintained silence on the matter, leaving the public awaiting further developments in this convoluted case.
