Agency (Chennai):In a recent incident in Chennai, the Greater Chennai Police apprehended three individuals for their involvement in a honey-trap scheme targeting a software engineer. The arrested include a 19-year-old woman from MGR Nagar, her live-in partner Ezhumalai (24), and his friend Krishnan (25).
The victim, a 37-year-old software engineer working in a senior position at an IT firm, had been in contact with the woman for about six months. The interaction, which began over the telephone, culminated in an invitation to her home under the pretext that she was alone and her parents were away.
Upon the techie’s arrival at her residence, the trio executed their plan by overpowering him and demanding money. They threatened to strip him and circulate his nude photos on social media if their demands were not met. Initially, the engineer transferred Rs 25,000 via an online digital platform, while the group demanded Rs 40,000. He convinced the trio that he would arrange more money from his friends and family, which led them to let him leave.
However, instead of arranging more money, the victim approached the Vyasarpadi police station to report the incident. The prompt action by the police led to the arrest of all three individuals involved in the scheme. They were subsequently produced before a magistrate court and have been remanded to judicial custody.
This incident has brought to light the increasing cases of honey-trap schemes in urban areas, where individuals are lured into compromising situations and then extorted for money. The swift response of the Chennai Police in apprehending the culprits reflects their commitment to tackling such cyber and social crimes effectively.
